The History of Houston's Musical Soul
September 30 - October 2, 2016
Sept.30 - Oct. 2, HBM will participate in the Houston History Alliance's 6th annual conference on local history. This year's theme is "The History of Houston's Musical Soul," so HBM seemed a perfect fit to help plan and present the weekend's events, which will be based in the new MATCH Theaters at 3400 Main Street. The conference has exploded into a three-dav event, with the centerpiece being the conference on Saturday, October 1. It will feature a keynote by Joe Nick Patoski and a number of panels exploring the city’s impact on many musical genres.
This is a big event for HBM--we'll be participating in many ways! One exciting way will be throughout the day at the pop-up museum in MATCH theater 3. HBM's table at this FREE museum, sponsored by UH Center for Public History, will feature displayed artifacts and very special guests--Blues legends who will sign autographs and tell stories about their careers in music.
HBM's "Get Us on the Bus" benefit concert on Sunday, October 2, is a featured event of the conference weekend! Don’t miss International Blues Challenge Finalist Evelyn Rubio and her band--They hit the Continental Club stage from 2 to 6 pm. Tickets are on sale now at www.houstonhistoryalliance.org. Food and drink will be available, and the $25 cover is going straight to HBM, thanks to the generosity of Pete Gordon at The Continental Club.
The conference weekend includes several other opportunities to experience Houston’s rich music heritage: 1) Friday, September 30, learn about Houston’s connection to Zydeco at the historic, newly renovated Deluxe Theater on Lyons Avenue. This event will include a screening of the 20-minute documentary “Texas Zydeco” with all attendees receiving a DVD copy of the film, 2) during lunch on Saturday, an acoustic washboard and stand-up base duo will entertain and 3) Saturday evening at The Continental Club, enjoy a free performance by Trudy Lynn, followed by a ticketed headliner. Plan to sample new music and learn new things about music you've enjoyed for years!
HBM joins HHA and other important local partners in bringing this one-of-a-kind event to Houston.
